Unless you’re a teen trying to sneak out of the house late at night, it may take you a while to realize you have a noisy garage door. But over time, a garage door can gradually become louder as it runs.
A noisy garage door may not seem like a big deal if it’s still going up and down. But ignoring what your door is trying to tell you will not help. The function of your garage door will only get worse when you ignore noises.
There are several reasons your garage door can become noisy when going up or down.
Wear and Tear
Like most anything else in this world, garage doors aren’t made to last forever. The older they get, the more noise they can make.
With older garage doors, the noise is often due to old rollers on the track that need more lubricant. Worn rollers, especially metal ones, can cause noise. Replacing metal rollers with nylon ones can result in noise reduction.
Also, as a steel door ages, it can get rusty from precipitation or humidity. As the door rusts, it can make more noise. If your door has a lot of rust, it’s time for a new one.
Loose Nuts or Bolts
Over time the vibration of the garage door moving will cause nuts or bolts to loosen. If your garage door is rattling, this may be the reason. Something could be loose on the track, causing vibration noises. This is an easy fix with a screwdriver. Be careful not to over-tighten any screws, as this can cause damage to the door.
Damaged Door Panels
Sometimes when you hear a banging noise, it might be because the door panels are bent. When they bend around the track curve, it can cause a bang or a pop. Also, over time, door panels can begin to bow or sag. This will also create noise. Whether a door panel is bent, bowed, or sagging, it’s time to replace it.
Loose Spring or Coil Tension
When a spring is not working properly, or the coil tension is incorrect, it can cause a rumbling noise. If this is the culprit of a noisy garage door, you need to call a professional for help. The tension of garage door springs can be dangerous. Don’t try to adjust, remove, or repair hinges.
Bent Tracks
If the door track is bent, it will cause noise as the rollers rub up or down the track. Look for metal filings on the track. That’s a clue that metal is scraping against metal. The garage door may need the alignment adjusted by a professional.
Loose Chain
The chain on your garage door opener can make a loud slapping sound when it comes loose. Again, this becomes loose over time due to the garage door vibrations. Not having the correct tension on the chain can also cause the door to make noise as it has jerky movement.
